What are Common Migraine Triggers?

June is Migraine Awareness Month.   At NETNA, we are focusing on migraines this month to bring awareness about the most common neurological disorder.

People that suffer with migraines may have triggers.  Some common food triggers include:

  • MSG
  • Aspartame
  • Alcohol
  • Certain cheeses
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits

Foods are not the only triggers for migraines.  Other common triggers include light, especially fluorescent light or light from a computer screen.  Dehydration and sleep deprivation can also cause migraines.  Changes in the weather and barometric pressure can also trigger migraines.

At NETNA, we encourage our patients who suffer from migraines to keep a migraine log documenting activities and food along with migraine frequency and severity to try to identify triggers.  Migraine logs can be as simple as written journals.  There are also several apps for smart phones that help track migraines and triggers.

At NETNA, Dr. Jetter specializes in treating patients who suffer from migraines.  Contact us for a consultation.
